We’ve almost reached the half way point of 2018 and there’s so much going on that SVM’s summer is proving to be a blockbuster!  Holiday season has begun with destinations such as San Francisco, Croatia and Norway claiming some lucky staff for a few days here and there but everything is very much business as usual at SVM for the ‘sunshine’ months.

There are new work springing up on all sides at the moment – both railway related and commercial.  Projects at several depots across the country continue to thrive with new works relating to LV testing, trace heating, HST servicing, sump pumps, roof works, drainage and air compressors.  Also on the railway we have been asked to look at further design for several existing projects such as level crossings within the Stirling, Dunblane and Alloa works, Edinburgh Signalling Centre and Kilwinning AFA.  Also beginning this month is some CCTV and lighting design for a station approach path, boiler design Dundee Station while we have also tendered for the next phase of works on the project covering the London to Corby route from London northward.  Moving away from the railway sector in June we have carried out some design on a bank premises in Livingston, a leisure park in East Kilbride, an office fit out in the Blantyre area and another car showroom in Sheffield.

Staying out for the summer this year are our projects including various works relating to the Stirling Dunblane and Alloa and Highland Mainline works; CET installation design at Railway depots; and Dundee station ticket office.  Retail and operational supplies at Glasgow Central Station is at a crucial stage in June while shore supplies are still a burning issue at sites including Haymarket, Inverness, Dundee, and Reading.  Works at Partick Station remain healthy as do those at a Glasgow Rail Depot, Aberdeen Station refurbishment and containment works on the Glasgow subways.  Waverley Station keeps us busy, as always, with works associated with the IECC, water supplies, lighting, PE duties and site supervision.  Smaller scale projects at railway properties such as electrical upgrades, platform alcove lighting, car park design, CCTV design, LED surveys and proposed modular accommodation works are ongoing while our South of the Border projects remain hot with ongoing works for lighting renewals in the Kent area, design at Liverpool Lime Street and several railway sites on the Huddersfield to Bradford route.  By way of a little summer sojourn from the railway, we are also busy on the commercial front this month.  We have continued to offer design advice for a high profile site on Glasgow’s up and coming riverside, some industrial units in East Kilbride and kitchen extract issues at a restaurant in Campbeltown.  We remain involved with an Edinburgh hotel, providing design advice following flood damage; ventilation installation at a site in Glasgow’s Broomielaw and CAD 3D models for education suites.  EPCs are still proving to be a hot topic with works being undertaken for a sports pavilion in Helensburgh; a business park near Greenock and an industrial unit in Eglinton Trading Estate.

We are happy this month to welcome Ciaran Thomson, who is joining us on a summer placement between University terms.  We hope that he will enjoy his time here and learn a lot from the team at SVM.  There are still possible vacancies for more seasoned engineers who have more experience with building services design (with a mechanical bias) in a consultancy setting so, if this sounds like you, please submit your CV to Elise McLean at elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk.  It’s the hot place to be!
