July News!
/As we thunder past the half way point of the year and head into the back half of 2021, we continue to hope that the current climate continues to improve. Several SVM staff are now fully vaccinated with the rest not far behind and there have even been some tentative holidays undertaken which has been very welcome indeed. For now the majority of staff are continuing to conduct business from home via all the lifesaving electronic means with which we’ve become so familiar; however, there is now a small group back working full time from the office. Hopefully the only way things can go is up!
July sees new works continuing to flock in our direction with SBEM works at a Glasgow Railway Yard; design for multiple NR station commercial properties and works associated with points converters in the Corkerhill area. We have become involved in design works for accommodation buildings at two Glasgow depots while away from the Railway we have provided advice on cable calculations for an industrial site in Carstairs. As well as this we are also in the early stages of tendering some shore supplies design in the very South of England and further works at two Glasgow low level stations with which we are already very familiar.
Existing projects dominating July include asset surveys for multiple Railway depots; detailed design works at both Reston Station and our Portobello Junction project; the remainder of design for an Inverness Railway yard; Horsham platform extension works; and large scale design works on the Ferrybridge to Goole route in England. As well as these we are making good progress on HST Lighting Upgrades at multiple sites; Edinburgh Recontrol works; GRIP stage 4 works at Dalcross; and Perth Depot Shore Supplies. Inverness continues to be a busy place as we edge nearer completion on several projects including Railway Yard design, Depot LV and HV upgrades, Motorail sidings, shore supplies and carriage stabling works. AFA works at Croy, Johnston and Port Glasgow Stations are ongoing as are temp design works at Ayr Station and design for rail sidings in Fort William. We are continuing to stick with Aberdeen Station though the construction phase and remain involved with electrical calcs for a project near Burntisland; Ebike installation in Inverness; blue light installation at Bellgrove Station; and Dundee railway yard lighting. Meanwhile Linlithgow platform extension works; and mechanical design at Polmadie Depot are coming along nicely as are; Aberdeen lighting gantries, and Cathcart DBs. Of course Glasgow Central and Waverley Station also remain a prominent feature with retail areas and electrical design for lighting DBs in the former and concourse lighting, heating and ventilation in the latter. Heading across the border into England remains very busy this month with the survey being arranged for railway works in the Whitley Bay area and station works getting off the ground near Rotherhithe. Design works for Bristol Junction and works at Reading Triangle are getting underway as is design for shore supplies at Crewe. Our 650V feeders renewal scheme in Middlesbrough and Whitehouse continues to make progress as does mechanical design in the Hambleton area; Station design works in Liverpool and our long running project at a Birmingham Station.
Our non railway works also remain healthy in July with works associated with a landfill site on the gorgeous island of Islay and provision of M&E advice following a fire at a café in Aberdeen. Works at the landmark Bell’s Bridge in Glasgow are ongoing as are those involving a retail park in Wishaw; a residential development in Edinburgh; and elements of the Clyde Gateway regeneration scheme.
There was cause for celebration this month as we once again had our annual RISQS audit and are pleased to have passed with flying colours once again. Life is busy here at SVM and if you think that you would like to come along for the ride, then why not apply to be part of the team? If you are an EP design engineer in either the electrical or mechanical disciplines and would like to join us (once it is safe to do so), please send a CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk. We’d love to hear from you.
