October News!

Despite October taking us into a beautiful Autumn, life remains unpredictable and full of challenges for everyone this year, with continuing changes in restrictions and worrying numbers of COVID-19 cases. SVM Glasgow takes the welfare of all employees very seriously and, in the wake of the most recent changes in Government advice, we have returned to a default working from home policy for all staff. There are still one or two people in the office everyday keeping it open and all other employees are working very hard from their homes to keep everything running smoothly across all our projects.
There is, however, no restriction on new projects cropping up at SVM with October seeing new Railway works at an Inverness depot yard, lighting gantries in Aberdeen and UPS issues at a signalling site in Motherwell. We’ve also been asked to look at some design in Perth, bollard lighting in the yard of a Glasgow depot and some station design at a Dumbarton station. We also have new opportunities South of the border this month with some mechanical design about to commence in the Hambleton area, while we also await instruction on design works at a major Manchester station.
Other projects keeping us busy this month are led by the construction phase of works at Aberdeen Station; extensive design at Goole swing bridge; stations on the Rugeley to Colwich line; HV/LV design in Inverness and Edinburgh Recontrol. Many other projects making good progress this month include signalling feeders at Glasgow North; effluent remediation works in the Stirling area; a 650V feeders renewal scheme in the Middlesbrough and Whitehouse areas; staff accommodation works at Ayr Station; a rail freight yard in the East End of Glasgow; and design at Birmingham Station. Projects still in their infancy include monitoring and telecoms works at Newcraighall and Brunstane; a fuel dispensing project at a major Glasgow Depot; and electrical design at a station in Perthshire. Heating and ventilation works at Edinburgh Waverley station are also in their early stages as are rewiring works at Motherwell Signalling Centre; canopy design in Arbroath and another AFA scheme at Carstairs. Projects coming to the end of their time with us include footbridge design near Cleethorpes; Highland Mainline and HEP East works; and design works at Reston and East Linton, however we expect to begin on the next phase of this project soon. Taking a step back from our railway works, we are also still engaged in October with design for a large, Victorian residential property in Castle Douglas, an office development in Aberdeen; and continuing design advice during the construction phase of the Glasgow Clyde Tidal Weir project.
We hope that all of our clients and collaborators are navigating these challenging times successfully and that all are keeping safe and well. In this current world that is constantly changing, SVM hope that we can maintain our same excellent standard of service so that, at least, can be relied upon! If you feel like you would be an asset to SVM’s excellent team and you have Railway EP Design experience then please submit your CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk and maybe you could join us – at an acceptable 2m distance of course!.
