February News!

2025 is now well underway and is shaping up to be another bumper year.  All sizes of projects in both the railway and commercial sectors are currently thriving and it is always wonderful to see how many of these are from well-known clients or are subsequent phases of projects that we have already successfully delivered.

This month we have begun to look at several new projects in the Railway sector with pumping station works in Dundee; a PHCC in Arbroath; footbridge lighting in York; and two separate projects at Dunkeld and Birnham Station.  We are undertaking design for multiple DBs at Glasgow Central and Waverley stations as well as some works associated with heating at the WSSC.  We have just begun surveys for resignalling design works in the Perth area; Motorail buffer stop works in Inverness; and a new phase of legacy migration works at multiple sites across the country.  Meanwhile, the commercial sector remains healthy with new projects for a healthcare facility in Elland and a recycling plant in Glasgow’s Tradeston area.

We remain a constant presence across the rest of the country with our biggest projects this month being design for station platforms on the West Highland main line; Transpennine Express premises in Hull, Newcastle and York; Clacton wheel lathe works; various projects around Glasgow Central Station including retail; PSP/compressor works, Level 4 TPE, electrical surveys, plant arch fire protection, and water tank works; Darlington signalling power; and design for the accelerated network.  In Inverness we continue to provide pit lighting works, panel scope design, fuel tank works and train crew accommodation; while surveys on the Aberdeen to Central Belt route are ongoing, alongside water pipe diversion, traincare facilities and signalling power works in Dundee; EMF works; and design for Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie.  Across the central belt we have progressed with 650V signalling feeders in the Townhill area; refurbishment works at a Polmadie relay room; design assistance for East Kilbride electrification works; design works at Portobello; mechanical design at Motherwell MDU; REB wraparound protection at multiple railway sites; and depot CET/water facilities.  Craigentinny CET detailed design and works for the refit of Edinburgh IECC are making good progress as are those for fuel control panels; heating, air-con and boiler replacement at Motherwell; and DPS works at Broomloan.  GRIP 5 AFA works at Balgray station and MELF works at multiple sites are due to begin soon; while we’ve begun to make headway with remedial works at Scotstounhill and Airdrie Stations; Yoker Bridge deck; and Depot works covering feeder protection upgrades.  We remain involved with the main Edinburgh stations for ventilation design, concourse lighting, calorifier design; digital advertising boards; and distribution design; while Ayrshire and the Borders see the final stages of Troon Station refurbishment and new LLPA works; Irvine MDU; booking office; platform water heating and re-energisation works at Ayr Station; and water tank design at Dumfries.  Heading into England we have ongoing projects for Ravensthorpe SFC; CCTV in a station car park in Darlington; replacement of copper medium telecomms to fibre on Railway SCADA sites; and various works at multiple depots including Tysley, Eastcroft and Etches Park covering road jacking, 10 car stabling, engine drop and depot protection services.  Goole swing bridge and Bangor to Colwyn Bay edge ever closer to completion; while CET design in Carmarthen; Selhurst REB and wheel lathe; and Ferrybridge to Goole route works remain ongoing.  We hope to soon begin design for Scarborough and Bletchley shore supplies and continue our reactive assistance for the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin routes, and Birmingham and Euston Stations.

We also remain busy in the commercial world with power design for an organic waste disposal plant; some assistance for an area of land in Drumchapel; a waste transfer facility in Helensburgh and extensive works associated with the expansion of Stranraer marina.  Our involvement at Glasgow’s famous SEC is ongoing and we continue to provide design advice for some small scale works for a commercial unit in Hillington Park; an office property in Partick; and a site at Herriott Watt University.

Several of our more junior employees are all back at University this month and we wish them all the best as they continue to learn and grow into the industry.  This is not confined to the classroom as there have been several CPD sessions held both online and in SVM’s office this month as everyone strives to be able to deliver the best service possible to our clients.  So, if you are looking for a new challenge and have some experience in the building services /railway sectors that you would like to expand, there could be a place here for you.  Send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk and we look forward to hearing from you.
