April News

Heading into Spring it’s nice to see the sun again and welcome the longer nights.  However, we’ve plenty to do with all the extra time as everyone continues to be busy bees in the SVM Office.

There are more new projects than Easter Eggs this month with new design works beginning at Motherwell and Carstairs, Aberdeen Clayhills fuelling apron extension and temporary platform bonding at Polmadie.  We are returning to carry out further works at Shieldmuir Station Car Park, Fort william CET and Blairhill ticket office, all of which we have completed successful projects at in the past.  Remaining with the Railway we have also become involved with HVAC design at Allerton, retail enhancements at multiple sites and station works at Alexandra Parade.  In the commercial sector business is also booming with new works for education facilities in Ayr and Wales; EVCP issues in Blantyre and design advice following fire damage at St Andrew’s University.

The biggest projects keeping us hopping this Spring are the design works for Goole Swing Bridge and the Tidal Weir in Glasgow for which the design is currently in full flow; works relating to air compressors at two large Scottish Railway depots; and underframe wash works in Inverness.  The Highland Mainline extension programme, including works for HEP East; remains busy while works at multiple Depots in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Perth are ongoing and cover areas such as potable water supplies, shore supplies, fuel road design, drainage works, LV testing, HST servicing, sump pumps, modular accommodation, high mast lighting, fuelling apron, roof works, temporary stabling and boiler replacements.  We are also still involved with many stations around the country with varied works including CP6 Building Upgrades, CIS design, EVCP design, lighting design, LED replacements, platform extension, retail supplies and Access for All.  We continue to provide containment survey works for the Glasgow Subway, feeder design in the Carstairs area and to fulfil our various capacities in the Stirling, Dunblane and Alloa project.  Heading down towards England we have escalator problems at a railway location in Birmingham under review while we continue to provide detailed design at a Railway property in the same area.  Station design near Doncaster and for locations on the Huddersfield to Bradford Route are ongoing while works associated with the works for the London to Corby route which heads Northwards from London are approaching completion.  Off the beaten tracks this month we are continuing to provide car park design in Glasgow city centre, carry out works for a high rise office building in Glasgow’s rapidly developing Finnieston area and just await the beginning of design works in an iconic Glasgow hotel with which we have been involved intermittently for the last six years.  Lighting design for a Glasgow city centre office is ongoing and CAD 3D models for education suites – with new locations arising.

We are looking forward to SVM Glasgow’s ten year Anniversary which is fast approaching in the next few weeks and a celebratory weekend is planned for all staff at the beginning of May, with a hotly anticipated stay in the heart of Perthshire on the cards.  We’ve come a long way in the last ten years and will surely go a lot further in the next ten – so why not look into submitting your application to join the SVM team?  CVs and covering letters can be emailed to Elise McLean, elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk . Forget the chocolate feasting next week – this could be a whole lot sweeter!
