April News!

This month finds us with a glimmer of hope at a return to something akin to normal.  It’s not long now until pubs, shops and restaurants are open and being able to move freely around the Country again has even come a little bit early.  A good burst of barbecue weather and Scotland’s gardens could be the busiest they’ve ever been!  Meanwhile, at SVM, we are still continuing to work from home with the office manned by a few staff and available every day for any of our team who needs to use its facilities.  Hopefully, if things continue to progress in this direction, we will soon be able to cautiously welcome more staff back to office working.  We’ll keep our fingers crossed!

This Spring is bursting with new projects alongside our old favourites, with new mechanical design works begun for Polmadie Depot and a project concerning the installation of the Ebikes at a Railway location in Inverness on the cards.  Glasgow Central station has been tempting us back again this month for further works associated with the retail areas and electrical design for lighting DBs, just more facets of an already very familiar site.  Also, staying local, we are looking at design for the shelter at Partick Station; an interesting high level feasibility of solar charging platform lighting systems; and some blue light installation at Belgrove – an exciting initiative that is spreading throughout the Railway.

Ongoing projects still in full swing in April are headed up by several projects in Inverness including Railway Yard design, Depot LV and HV upgrades, Motorail sidings, shore supplies and carriage stabling works; Perth Depot Shore Supplies; the construction phase at Aberdeen Station; GRIP5-8 design in the Reston area; and design for the Ferrybridge to Goole Line.  Among newer projects that are beginning to gain momentum this month are shore supply works at Perth Depot; GRIP stage 4 works at Dalcross; and design for Portobello junction while ‘Access for All’ design works in Croy, Port Glasgow and Johnston and platform extension design at Horsham are all making good progress.  Small scale design works are still ongoing for Dundee railway yard lighting, Aberdeen lighting gantries, Linlithgow platform extension and Cathcart DBs as are works covering a Depot and rail sidings in the Fort William area; design advice for some departure roads and fuel dispensing works at Corkerhill Depot; railway works in the Law and Newton areas; and the Edinburgh Recontrol scheme.  Edinburgh Waverley station is still a hot destination with works ongoing for concourse lighting, heating and ventilation; and we also continue to be involved with signalling, UPS design and rewiring in the Motherwell area and works at Ayr Station.  There are still several ongoing projects in England including a 650V feeders renewal scheme in Middlesbrough and Whitehouse; mechanical design in the Hambleton area; and our large scale scheme at Goole Swing Bridge, which is nearing the end of its current phase.  Station design works in the Liverpool area are ongoing as is shore supplies design in Crewe; large scale signalling works on the Rugeley to Colwich line; and our long running project at a Birmingham Station.   Non Railway works in April include a retail park in Wishaw, a residential development in Edinburgh and works at an Alloa leisure centre.  Meanwhile Glasgow’s famous Bell’s Bridge remains a feature as do elements of the Clyde Gateway regeneration scheme and our design support for a large, Victorian residential property in Castle Douglas.

With a busy summer ahead we’re hoping that SVM’s team might just get a little bigger and we are currently looking for a new EP design engineer in both electrical and mechanical disciplines.  We would hopefully be looking to start any new recruits once working in the office is allowed to safely resume so if you think that you have what it takes to join us, please send a CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk or response to one of our adverts on Linked In, CV Library or S1 Jobs.  We’ve got a nice, clean, sanitised seat waiting for you!
