May News!

As we head towards summertime everything is beginning to look brighter.  It’s nice to see people around the city centre again and even nicer to see the outdoor pub and restaurant tables.  We continue to hope for a smooth transition back to (almost) normality and, for that reason, we are continuing to play safe for the time being with most staff still working from home while a few man the office.  Everyone is still available through through all the technological means that have kept us all going throughout this past year.

We continue to keep busy this Spring with several new projects arising including some design at Stirling Station, further AFA works at Johnston and Port Glasgow Stations and some electrical calcs for a project near Burntisland.  We have also begun looking at larger scale works for a rectification project in the Cumbernauld area; while, heading South, we have also begun a new phase of works at Bristol Junction and works at Reading Triangle.

Of course we still have many ongoing projects this month, the most persistent of which have been the Inverness quintet of Railway Yard design, Depot LV and HV upgrades, Motorail sidings, shore supplies and carriage stabling works; Perth Depot Shore Supplies; the construction phase at Aberdeen Station; GRIP5-8 design in the Reston area; design for the Ferrybridge to Goole Line; and Edinburgh Recontrol.  Also in progress in Inverness is the Ebike installation project while, not too far away, GRIP stage 4 works at Dalcross are also well underway.  In the two central Scotland hubs of Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley we continue to be involved with works associated with the retail areas and electrical design for lighting DBs in the former and concourse lighting, heating and ventilation in the latter.  Other stations on our radar this month include Partick for shelter design; Bellgrove for blue light installation; Croy for AFA design; Linlithgow for platform extension works; and Ayr for temp design works.  We continue to make good progress with mechanical design at Polmadie Depot; Portobello Junction; and design for rail sidings in Fort William; and with small scale works for Dundee railway yard lighting, Aberdeen lighting gantries, and Cathcart DBs.  In the Law and Newton area there are still design works ongoing as are signalling, UPS design and rewiring projects in the Motherwell area.  Heading into England there is still a lot going on with platform extension design at Horsham; a 650V feeders renewal scheme in Middlesbrough and Whitehouse; mechanical design in the Hambleton area; and the final touches to the current phase of our large scale scheme at Goole Swing Bridge.  Station design works in the Liverpool area are ongoing as is shore supplies design in Crewe; large scale signalling works on the Rugeley to Colwich line; and our long running project at a Birmingham Station.  Off of the Railway in May we continue to be involved with a retail park in Wishaw, a residential development in Edinburgh and works at an Alloa leisure centre.  Meanwhile Glasgow’s famous Bell’s Bridge remains a feature as do elements of the Clyde Gateway regeneration scheme and our design support for a large, Victorian residential property in Castle Douglas.

Personal progress is ongoing at SVM too this month with training completed for mental health first aid and in Microstation software, all of which goes towards helping us deliver the best service we can to all of our clients.  We’re still hoping that SVM’s team might just expand with the warming weather as we continue the search for a new EP design engineer in both electrical and mechanical disciplines.  We would hopefully be looking to start any new recruits once working in the office is allowed to safely resume so if you think that you have what it takes to join us, please send a CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk.
