February News!
/February has seen 2022 really get up and running with several new projects flooding in and some older ones making excellent progress. We’re definitely heading towards Spring at a dizzying rate but we are delighted to be doing it in the company of our long term clients and some exciting new faces as well.
This month has seen new works arising around Inverness Workstations and Axle Counters; a scheme based around the route between Aberdeen and the Central Belt; and a railway asset associated with a reservoir in the borders. Design for a pumping station in Glasgow is another new arrival as are ticket vending machines across multiple stations; substation security design; and mechanical design for a SFC. We are also in the early tendering or pricing stages for works including station lighting, car park extension, station canopies; fuel upgrades; anti icing; and the next phase of Goole Swing Bridge works. All of which should keep our dance card relatively full well into the Spring.
We also have several established projects which have survived the winter, the most prominent of which being Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations; the construction phase of works at Aberdeen Station; CETs at Fort William Depot; ventilation design at Edinburgh Waverley Station; and retail units at Network Rail properties. Other large scale projects that are still very much ongoing this month include design provision for Reston Station; Carstairs Rationalisation; Dalcross GRIP 4 works; and Edinburgh Control Centre Renewals. Also going strong in February are AFA schemes at Selby, Croy, Johnstone and Port Glasgow; DBs at Cathcart; and rectification and survey works for multiple stations including Hyndland and Burntisland. Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central Stations also remain lively with projects including gas supplies; toilet ventilation, design for superloos and concourse lighting at the former and ventilation survey works, retail space design, power supplies; lighting DB design; and design for the passenger management centre at the latter. Depots are also a great source of activity with Eastfield, Corkerhill, Yoker and Polmadie all providing works covering accommodation design; departure roads, drainage and points converters. As well as this, we also have several smaller scale projects making good progress this month with works including station ticket vending machines; train crew accommodation design; frost protection; fluid dispensing works at Haymarket; and design for platform water heaters in Ayrshire. We remain involved with a Railway property on London Road; a new railway shed at Carstairs; design for Troon Station and multiple sites for HST lighting upgrades. England continues to be a regular destination for us with additional design for the London to Corby Route and works on the Ferrybridge to Goole route making headway - with a new phase of works on the way for the latter. Meanwhile, VAMOS level crossings; Birmingham Station; 650V feeders renewal in Middlesbrough and Whitehouse are approaching completion with early stage projects such as Whitley Bay Station just waiting to take their place.
The commercial sector is still in full swing this February with works related to the ash lagoons in Valleyfield created following the closure of Longannet Power Station in 2016; provision of expert advice following a fire in a Glasow University building; and office refurbishment at a business park in Musselburgh.
Finally. after a long hiatus, it’s encouraging to see some of the industry dinners returning in the coming months and SVM are delighted to be hosting tables at the IRSE Dinner in March. It has been a long time since we were able to dress up and mingle with our clients and other consultants and everyone at SVM is thoroughly looking forward to this event. But could there be a seat there for you to join us? if you are a mechanical or electrical engineer with experience in a consultancy setting and you are looking to get involved with exciting projects like these, please send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk and join the party.
