January News!
/2022 is upon us and hopefully it will be a good step on the road back to normality. We hope that all our clients and collaborators managed to have a safe and entertaining time over the holidays and are raring to go for the year ahead. The SVM office is getting all geared up for another 12 months which already promise to be packed with interesting projects and challenges to overcome.
January has already started with a bang as we have received work requests for several projects including the next phase of Goole Swing Bridge works, a project with which we were heavily involved in the earlier stages. It’s always exciting to see a project through multiple phases and watch design choices becoming reality. We are also providing costs for smaller scale works including station ticket vending machines; train crew accommodation design; and retail space works in a station property. All of which are definitely making for a Happy New Year at SVM!
Of course there are several projects making the transition into 2022 with us, the leaders of this pack being Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations; the construction phase of works at Aberdeen Station; CETs at Fort William Depot; and ventilation design at Edinburgh Waverley Station. Other long term projects that are still ongoing include design provision for Reston Station; Carstairs Rationalisation; Dalcross GRIP 4 works; and Edinburgh Control Centre Renewal. To the North, Aberdeen has seen frost protection and anti-icing works this winter while works around Inverness Depots and Perth shore supplies are reaching completion. Further South, AFA schemes at Selby, Croy, Johnston and Port Glasgow; DBs at Cathcart; and rectification and survey works for multiple stations including Hyndland and Burntisland are all still ongoing while fluid dispensing works at Haymarket; load monitoring for a Langbank station; and design for platform water heaters in Ayrshire begin to get off the ground. Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central Station are still two busy hubs of activity with projects including gas supplies; toilet ventilation, design for superloos and concourse lighting at the former and ventilation survey works, retail space design, power supplies and lighting DB design at the latter all making good progress. Depots remain big business for the start of this year with Eastfield, Corkerhill, Yoker and Polmadie all providing works including accommodation design; departure roads, drainage and points converters works. Smaller scale projects that remain with us this month cover works involving a Railway property in London Road; Bellgrove’s blue light installation; a new railway shed at Carstairs; and various Railway retail properties while, further down the Ayrshire coast, works are ongoing for Troon Station and multiple sites for HST lighting upgrades. Our neighbours to the South also continue to generate interesting projects with England playing host to works on the Ferrybridge to Goole route; additional design for the London to Corby Route; VAMOS level crossings; Birmingham Station; 650V feeders renewal in Middlesbrough and Whitehouse; and design at Whitley Bay Station which we are eager to commence.
The commercial sector is also an important factor in our plans for 2022 with works related to the ash lagoons in Valleyfield created following the closure of Longannet Power Station in 2016; provision of expert advice following a fire in a Glasow University building; and office refurbishment at a business park in Musselburgh.
There’s already a lot happening in 2022 and we can’t wait to meet these challenges head on. However, there could be room for another pair of hands to lighten the load! So if you are a mechanical or electrical engineer with experience in a consultancy setting and you are looking for a new adventure for a new year then the SVM team could be waiting to welcome you. If you are interested, please send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk and make 2022 exciting.
