July News!

It’s been a busy month at SVM as the summer gets into full swing and everybody has exotic travel destinations on their mind.  Among all the holiday excitement, however, we are also pleased to announce that we have once again passed our annual RISQS audit with flying colours and are delighted to continue serving the Railway with the best design and safest practices possible.

July has lots of new projects arising with prospective large scale works for FTN design in the Stoke/Derby area and replacement of copper medium telecomms to fibre on Railway properties.  We have been asked to provide electrical design support for rail sites around the Aberdeen area while we have also begun to look at an LMD Air Compressor at Haymarket Depot and a DNO supply cubicle in the Larbert area.  Meanwhile we are keeping things interesting away from the Railway with new projects including the M&E design associated with a new physiotherapy suite in Cambridge and the survey and report following water damage at a playing fields’ pavilion.

Lots of projects remain with us through the warmer weather and these are headed up by separate designs for the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin Railway routes; GRIP 4-5 design works at Levenmouth; AFA works at Anniesland Station; and station rebuild design at Troon.  We are very busy close to home this month with works for Eastfield Depot CETs; boiler renewal works at Craigentinny LMD; remedial station works at multiple sites; and the ongoing AFA scheme at Port Glasgow.  Cadder Depot continues to be popular with ongoing works including asset plans; design for temporary LV supplies, a sliding gate, railway shed, substations and DHL; while works for Barrhead electrification and LLPA design at various sites are still going strong.  The Carstairs rationalisation project is still in full swing; replacement of Motherwell Station boiler for a new sustainably designed air source heat pump arrangement is ongoing; and there is a lot of activity around the retail spaces at Glasgow Central Station.  Meanwhile we are eager to begin some fire damper investigation works; while Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations are approaching completion.  Across the rest of the country we remain involved with works on the Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie route; the Dalcross GRIP 4 project; various projects in Inverness including work stations and axle counters and a railway simulator; and  design for a station booking office in Ayrshire.  England and Wales are also looking very healthy this month with ongoing projects for Bangor to Colwyn Bay design; a new stage of works for Tysley Depot; resignalling in the Darlington area; tunnel works at a site in West Yorkshire; and CRE duties for Nevillehill and Heaton Depots.  Design surrounding the traffic light at Great Glen Station is well underway in Leicestershire while reactive involvement is ongoing for long standing projects at Birmingham and Euston Stations; and design near Widnes.  The current stages of Goole Swing Bridge (GRIP 6 to 8 stages) and large scale works for the Ferrybridge to Goole route are both nearing completion but we are looking forward to new works beginning for wheel lathe design works near Selhurst.

We are happy to remain involved in the commercial sector this July with mechanical design for a new ophthalmic day theatre; an office refurbishment in Kilsyth; the renovation of a farm building; and design for works at a timber yard near Fort William.  We are also still hopefully awaiting confirmation of Port Authority works at varying stages of design and implementation from Fort William in the North, Liverpool in the West and Sheerness in the South East.

While the schools, colleges and Universities begin their summer break, SVM Glasgow is delighted to support continuing education within the industry.  This year we are welcoming Rokas Vidugiris in a summer placement role which we hope will have a great impact on his ongoing studies in engineering.  While Rokas gets a summer taster of being part of the SVM team, there still could be a permanent spot available for one electrical and one mechanical candidate.  So if you are an engineer with Railway based electrical or mechanical design experience in a consultancy/contractor setting, then why not get in touch?  Please send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk.  We’d love to hear from you.
