June News!

Despite the distinct lack of sun at the beginning of this summer, SVM is off to a bright start for the season with new staff, a new look for the office and, of course, several new projects arising in both our natural habitat of the Railway and some more slightly surprising places!

New works that have arisen in June include feeder protection upgrades and design centred around LMD fuel control panels at multiple Railway Depots.  We have also received enquiries for new and further works at Etches Park in Derby, where we have recently been involved in multiple capacities; and we have begun to look at design for a drying room serving a Railway facility in Glasgow City Centre.

We have many ongoing projects in June, the most prominent of which being Waverley concourse lighting, Clacton Wheel Lathe, LEV design for engineering; East Kilbride electrification; accelerated network design (for which we have also been asked to participate in the next stage of works); and works on the Welwyn to Hitchin route.  Other projects making healthy progress this month include design for Waverley Calorifiers, Shields Depot; Trans Pennine Express facilities at stations in York and Newcastle; Ayr Station booking Office; and surveys on the Aberdeen to Central Belt route.  As well as these we have made our usual tour of the country covering projects with far spread sites including power supply works, telecoms power supply design, and vending machine works.  Then, starting in Inverness, we are covering design of panel scope and train crew accommodation; Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie works; and level crossing design at Banavie and Aldclune.  Coming South into the Central belt we are continuing with replacement of copper medium telecomms to fibre on Railway SCADA sites; AFA works at Balgray and Anniesland stations (with new works at Springburn also in the pipeline); containment works at Singer; GRIP 4 and 5 design works at Levenmouth and Portobello; heating, air-con and boiler replacement works at Motherwell; and water pipe diversion works in Dundee.  Yoker Bridge deck works are ongoing as are remedials design in Clydebank; DPS works at Broomloan and CET and water facilities at multiple sites.  Edinburgh and Glasgow major stations provide several more projects this month with digital advertising boards and distribution design at Waverley; works at the Waverley signalling Centre; electrical surveys and junction lighting at Glasgow Central; and ticket office design at Glasgow Queen Street.  Heading into the Borders, works are in full swing for Ayr Platform water heaters; and Ayr Station re-energisation.  Troon Station refurbishment is at the site support stage and Kirkconnel life extension works awaits the next step in the design process.  And finally we reach England, where we remain just as busy with works at depots in Eastcroft, Etches Park and Tysley; Goole Swing Bridge; and tunnel works in West Yorkshire.  Additional works for the Rugeley to Colwich route continue this month while reactive assistance on projects at Birmingham and Euston Stations continues to be provided.  Works in Selhurst for both an REB and wheel lathe are ongoing; and we continue to edge closer to the completion of works for the Ferrybridge to Goole route; and Bangor to Colwyn Bay.

Our involvement in the commercial sector stays strong in June with survey and reporting works for a power station site in Dounreay now underway, while Building Control acceptance for a commercial unit in Dumfries remains ongoing, as does design support for works at an ophthalmic day theatre in Cambridge.  We continue to provide design advice for an office refurbishment in Kilsyth; works at a roundabout in the North of Glasgow which are nearing completion; and we are eagerly awaiting the start of extensive works associated with the expansion of Stranraer marina.

We are delighted to welcome a new face this month as Dale McGrogan joins us in the position of Assistant Mechanical Engineer.  Dale’s background is as a commercial gas engineer and we wish him every success in growing into his role as part of the SVM team.  We are also pleased to announce some promotions this month with Ben Reid and John Burns assuming the roles of Associate, Calum Doherty ascending to Senior Engineer and Allan Harkness moving to the position of Engineer.  Congratulations to all and we can’t wait to see where this new generation of SVM talent will take the company in the future.
