May News!

Despite the weather, Spring is well underway and the half way point of the year is fast approaching.  This is always a busy time of year in the SVM office and this year is no exception with many new and challenging projects keeping us on our toes into summer.

The Railway, as always, has proved bountiful in May with new projects about to get underway for Trans Pennine Express facilities at stations in York and Newcastle; and further work at Waverley Signalling Centre – a site at which we’ve carried out so many works, it is practically a second home.  As well as these, we are also just beginning to look at stabling works at Etches Park Depot; AFA works in Springburn; further sites on the accelerated network design; and, away from the Railway, a marina expansion project.

Projects making healthy progress in May are headed up by Ayr Platform water heaters; wheel lathe works at Clacton-on-Sea; Caledonia Chambers retail fit out; surveys on the Aberdeen to Central Belt route; and copper medium telecomms to fibre on Railway SCADA sites.  Once again we are well spread across the country beginning in the North with design of panel scope and train crew accommodation in Inverness; lighting design in Dunkeld; Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie works; and level crossing design at Banavie and Aldclune.  Heading towards the Central Belt, we are continuing with AFA works at Balgray and Anniesland stations; containment works at Singer; design at East Kilbride; GRIP 4 and 5 design works at Levenmouth and Portobello; and water pipe diversion works in Dundee.  Design for Yoker Bridge Deck has made excellent progress, as has remedials design in Clydebank; some cubicle design in Dumbarton; DPS works at Broomloan; and design and fire alarm works for multiple AFA sites.  We are continuing to provide DB design at Paisley; heating, air-con and boiler replacement works at Motherwell; CET and water facilities at multiple sites; and design works have begun at Shields Depot.  The main stations in Edinburgh and Glasgow remain busy places with calorifier replacement, lighting design, digital advertising boards and distribution design at Waverley; electrical surveys and junction lighting at Glasgow Central; and ticket office design at Glasgow Queen Street.  Arriving at the borders we are pleased to be involved with some re-energisation works and design of a booking office in Ayrshire; the refurbishment of Troon Station; and Kirkconnel life extension works.  As well as this, we also have several projects with multiple sites dotted around the country including power supply works, telecoms power supply design, vending machine works; LEV design and continuing works on the accelerated network.  However, it doesn’t stop there as we cross the border into England.  Works at depots in Eastcroft, Etches Park and Tysley; Goole Swing Bridge; and tunnel works in West Yorkshire continue to make progress; while we remain actively involved with design for the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin Railway routes; and railway sidings lighting in the Derby area.  Reactive assistance on projects at Birmingham and Euston Stations continues to be provided; works in Selhurst for both an REB and wheel lathe are ongoing; and we continue to edge closer to the completion of works for the Ferrybridge to Goole route; and Bangor to Colwyn Bay.

May sees us continuing to maintain links in the commercial sector with survey works for a power station site in Dounreay about to begin, while we remain involved with Building Control acceptance for a commercial unit in Dumfries; design support for works at an ophthalmic day theatre in Cambridge; and design works for an office refurbishment in Kilsyth.  We are hopeful that we will soon receive the green light for a project concerning wind farms as lighting works at a roundabout in the North of Glasgow begin to wind down.

Holiday season will be upon us before we know it, with most staff jet-setting across the world on a well-earned break over the summer.  But do you feel like maybe you need more than a holiday to shake up your career and bring you some fresh challenges?  Perhaps a seat in the SVM office is just what you’ve been looking for!  So, if you are an EP design engineer with experience in a consultancy setting - then submit your CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk.  Then the destination is up to you!
