March News!

Spring is in the air and SVM are ending the 2023-2024 financial year on a high note with plenty of new projects in the pipeline and ongoing large scale works all making excellent progress.  We would like to thank all our clients and contributors for another great year and we look forward to working with all of you again in 24-25.

As usual, there has been a healthy influx of new projects for the end of the financial year, most of which coming from the Railway.  We have begun to look at a level crossing near Banavie; load monitoring at multiple sites including Inverkeithing, Cumbernauld, Stirling and Portobello; and design works at Shields Depot – a site with which we are already very familiar.  There are signalling centre refurbishment projects in Edinburgh and Dundee; station remedials design in Clydebank; DPS works at Broomloan; some cubicle design in Dumbarton; and fire alarm works for multiple AFA sites.  Meanwhile, away from the Railway, we have also been instructed to undertake surveys for an interesting power station site in Dounreay.

As well as these, we are also making great progress on our existing projects with the foremost being Waverley lighting; Clacton wheel lathe; Caledonia Chambers design; surveys on the  Aberdeen to the Central Belt line; and Balgray Station AFA works.  We are typically well travelled this month with projects all over the country in several capacities across the Railway.  Many schemes cover large sections of the Railway infrastructure such as LEV design; copper medium telecomms to fibre on Railway SCADA sites; electrical design for the accelerated network; and telecoms power.  In more localised areas we also have electrification design at East Kilbride; GRIP 4 and 5 design works at Levenmouth and Portobello; Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie; railway sidings lighting in the Derby area; Darlington resignalling; design for the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin Railway routes; works on the Ferrybridge to Goole route; and Bangor to Colwyn Bay design works.  Depots and MDUs are busy with DB design at Paisley; heating, air-con and boiler replacement works at Motherwell; CET and water facilities at multiple sites; electrical surveys at LMD compressors for Haymarket; Selhurst REB and wheel lathe; and water pipe diversion works in Dundee.  We also remain heavily involved in various works across 3 large depots in England at Eastcroft, Etches Park and Tysley.  Stations continue to keep us on our toes this month with lighting works at Glasgow Central Junction and Dunkeld; AFA works at Anniesland, Dumfries and the temporary works at Carstairs; train crew accommodation design in Inverness; design for multiple station vending machines; containment works at Singer; a booking office in Ayrshire; and the refurbishment of Troon Station.  That still leaves the big Edinburgh and Glasgow stations, which are abuzz with design for retail units and electrical surveys at Glasgow Central; ticket office design at Glasgow Queen St; and digital advertising boards and the distribution boxes at Waverley.  England’s stations remain lively too, with reactive works for long standing projects at Birmingham and Euston Stations.  Of course there are always a few projects that refuse to be classified.  These include surveys and design for a data centre in Didcot; Aldclune level crossing; Kirkconnel life extension works; bridge deck works at Yoker; tunnel works in West Yorkshire and, probably our longest running project to date, Goole Swing Bridge.

Non Railway projects this month are still making their presence felt with Building Control acceptance for a commercial unit in Dumfries; design support for works at an ophthalmic day theatre in Cambridge; and design works for an office refurbishment in Kilsyth.  A new phase of lighting works at a roundabout in the North of Glasgow are now in full swing; and we eagerly await the green light for a project concerning wind farms.

As always, there is a lot going on at SVM, so if you are tired of Spring Cleaning and need a new challenge - and you are an EP design engineer with experience in a consultancy setting - then submit your CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk.  It could be just the thing to put a Spring in your step!
