April News1
/Easter is over and summer is (hopefully) just around the corner as we leave behind a very prosperous 23-24 and barrel into another new financial year. Everyone at SVM is excited about the challenges ahead and we look forward to meeting them with our usual panache!.
New projects beginning the 24-25 year with us include re-energisation works at an Ayrshire station; design for the calorifiers at Waverley station; and new works around power supplies at multiple Railway sites. Glasgow Central station will also soon be our home away from home as we have been asked to undertake separate TPE works at Caledonia Chambers, a site with which we are currently involved in many capacities.
April’s big ongoing projects are led by works at Clacton wheel lathe; Tysley Depot, Caledonia Chambers Retail Fit Out, telecoms power supply design at multiple sites; and design for Yoker Bridge Deck. Other projects making healthy progress this month are Waverley Lighting; Aberdeen to the Central Belt; and Balgray Station AFA works. Stations are big business this month, with the main Scottish stations providing design for retail units and electrical surveys at Glasgow Central; ticket office design at Glasgow Queen St; and digital advertising boards and the distribution boxes at Waverley; while smaller scale station works include remedials design in Clydebank; some cubicle design in Dumbarton; DPS works at Broomloan; and design and fire alarm works for multiple AFA sites. Also going strong are lighting works at Glasgow Central Junction and Dunkeld; train crew accommodation design in Inverness; design for multiple station vending machines; containment works at Singer; a booking office in Ayrshire; and the refurbishment of Troon Station. Schemes that stride across the Railway routes include LEV design; copper medium telecomms to fibre on Railway SCADA sites; electrical design for the accelerated network; electrification design at East Kilbride; GRIP 4 and 5 design works at Levenmouth and Portobello; and Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie. As well as these, depot and MDU projects continue to flourish with DB design at Paisley; heating, air-con and boiler replacement works at Motherwell; CET and water facilities at multiple sites; electrical surveys at LMD compressors for Haymarket; Selhurst REB and wheel lathe; and water pipe diversion works in Dundee. There have also been load monitoring reports produced for multiple MDU sites this month and design works begun at Shields Depot; while the interesting little projects that define themselves continue, such as level crossing design at Banavie and Aldclune; Kirkconnel life extension works; and signalling centre refurbishment projects in Edinburgh and Dundee. Of course, across the border, England is just as busy with large projects in full swing at depots in Eastcroft and Etches Park; Goole Swing Bridge; tunnel works in West Yorkshire; surveys and design for a data centre in Didcot; design for the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin Railway routes; and railway sidings lighting in the Derby area. Projects that are nearing completing down South include Darlington resignalling; works on the Ferrybridge to Goole route; and Bangor to Colwyn Bay design works. Meanwhile we continue to provide reactive assistance on projects at Birmingham and Euston Stations..
As always, we continue to keep our eye on the commercial sector with a project about to begin for a power station site in Dounreay, while there has been good progress on Building Control acceptance for a commercial unit in Dumfries; design support for works at an ophthalmic day theatre in Cambridge; and design works for an office refurbishment in Kilsyth. A new phase of lighting works at a roundabout in the North of Glasgow are now in full swing; and we eagerly await the green light for a project concerning wind farms.
We are delighted to welcome a new face this month as Robbie Foubister joins the team as a Graduate Engineer and we wish him the best of luck in his new position. As usual, this month’s projects offer an interesting and diverse view of the country’s Railway, so if the April showers are getting you down, perhaps this might just be the challenge you’re looking for!. - If you are an EP design engineer with experience in a consultancy setting - then submit your CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk.
