November News!
/In the penultimate news update of 2021, we are all working hard at SVM -with very little disruption from COP26 - and looking forward to, hopefully, a slightly more normal festive season being around the corner. Things are already shaping up to be a busy 2022 and we look forward to being able to face these challenges as an in-person team once again.
New projects just making it into 2021 this month include a ventilation survey at Glasgow Central’s Caledonia Chambers; some frost protection works at Aberdeen Clayhills Depot (a must for a Scottish winter!); rectification works for multiple stations including Hyndland and Burntisland; and some design involving gas supplies at our old favourite, Edinburgh Waverley Station. Also in November, we are in the very early stages of looking at the next phase of works for our large scale project on the Ferrybridge to Goole route in England; works revolving around a new shed at Carstairs and a bit of load monitoring close to home at Glasgow Queen Street Station.
Several ongoing projects are with us through the end of the year, the most prominent of which being Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations; Portobello Junction; and further design on the London to Corby route. Also South of the Border we continue to be involved with design on the current phase of the Ferrybridge to Goole line works; VAMOS level crossings; Horsham platform extension; and station design in Rotherhithe. Works at Whitley Bay are gearing up to get going while our long running Birmingham Station project remains with us with new works still being requested. We are also easing towards the end of projects including 650V feeders renewal in Middlesbrough and Whitehouse; mechanical design in the Hambleton area; station design works in Liverpool; and Reading Triangle. Moving into Scotland we continue to provide design services for a selection of West Coast stations; electrical design at Troon; and HST Lighting upgrades at multiple sites. Our own Glasgow is still home to multiple projects including design for a Railway property in London Road; Bellgrove’s blue light installation; Cathcart DBs; and various Railway retail properties. Glasgow Central Station still hosts projects including retail space design, power supplies and lighting DB design while the city’s depots at Eastfield, Corkerhill, Yoker and Polmadie remain busy with accommodation design; departure roads, drainage and points converters works. Moving across the central belt we are making good progress with projects including signalling power design for East Linton; Reston; Carstairs Rationalisation; AFA schemes at Selby, Croy, Johnston and Port Glasgow; and platform extension at Linlithgow. As we reach Edinburgh we are happy to still be involved with Edinburgh Control Centre Renewal and fluid dispensing works at Haymarket; while Edinburgh Waverley remains a favourite destination with works including toilet ventilation, design for superloos and concourse lighting. Finally, heading North, we are reaching completion on asset surveys at locations across the country while we are in full swing with Dalcross GRIP 4 works; Aberdeen Station Construction Phase and gantry lighting; CETs at Fort William Depot; and shore supplies design at Perth.
Keeping us off the Railway this month, we also have several commercial projects in progress including works related to the ash lagoons in Valleyfield created following the closure of Longannet Power Station in 2016; provision of expert advice following a fire in a Glasow University building; and office refurbishment at a business park in Musselburgh.
As teased last month, we are indeed delighted to welcome two new faces to the SVM office. Calum Doherty is undertaking the role of Electrical Engineer while Ross Hamilton has filled the space of Graduate Mechanical Engineer and we wish them all the best for the future in their careers with us. Could we possibly squeeze one more person in? You never know! If the above sounds exciting to you – and you are an EP design engineer in either the electrical or mechanical disciplines - please send a CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk and you could just be next.
