October News!

Spooky season has descended upon us once again but there are far more treats than tricks at SVM this October.  We’re back into the swing of working from the office again as a full team and University has started back for the office’s rising stars who are making excellent progress on their degree courses at University.  We wish them the best of luck for their forthcoming academic year.

This month has also seen the ghosts of past projects arise as we have been asked to enter into the GRIP 5 design works at East Linton following the successful completion of GRIP 4; while we have also become involved with design for a Railway property at London Road and drainage issues at a Glasgow Depot – both under the instruction of the architect.  Another interesting endeavour this month is a project related to the ash lagoons in Valleyfield created following the closure of Longannet Power Station in 2016.

There are plenty of existing projects still bubbling away in the SVM cauldron this month, the foremost of which being Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations which are now in full swing; Portobello Junction; Carstairs Rationalisation, Dalcross GRIP 4 works; and the Edinburgh Control Centre Renewal.  AFA schemes are in various stages at Selby, Croy, Johnston and Port Glasgow, while survey works are just getting underway for a selection of West Coast stations.  Other stations where we continue to undertake design works this month include Troon, Haymarket for fluid dispensing; Reston; Aberdeen, now in the construction phase; Bellgrove’s blue light installation; platform extension at Linlithgow; and various retail properties.  Of course, our two big station sites Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central also remain busy with toilet ventilation, design for superloos and concourse lighting at the former and retail space design, power supplies and lighting DB design at the latter.  Railway depots also remain big business in October with design works at Polmadie; Corkerhill for departure roads and points converters; Eastfield for shore supplies; Fort William for CETs; and Dundee and Aberdeen for yard and gantry lighting respectively; all alongside accommodation buildings at Eastfield, Yoker and Corkerhill.  Also making excellent progress this month are Cathcart DBs; HST Lighting Upgrades at multiple sites; electrical calculations for a project near Burntisland; asset surveys at locations across the country; and shore supplies at Perth.  Scotland is not the only busy place, with many of our projects also thriving in England such as design on the Ferrybridge to Goole line; VAMOS level crossings; a revisit to provide further design on the London to Corby route; Horsham platform extension; and station design in Rotherhithe.  Meanwhile, our long running Birmingham Station project and works at Whitley Bay are making good progress; while 650V feeders renewal in Middlesbrough and Whitehouse; mechanical design in the Hambleton area; station design works in Liverpool; Reading Triangle; and Bristol Junction are all nearing completion.

The commercial sector this month continues to see SVM tackle varied projects with provision of expert advice following a fire in a Glasow University building; office refurbishment at a business park in Musselburgh; design for the landmark Bell’s Bridge in Glasgow; the Clyde Gateway Regeneration Scheme and Glasgow’s Tidal Weir.

It’s busy and bustling in the SVM office as usual and we are delighted that we expect to welcome two new members to the team over the next few weeks.  However, that doesn’t mean that there definitely isn’t room for any more, so if you would like a chance to trick or treat with us – and you are an EP design engineer in either the electrical or mechanical disciplines - please send a CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk.  Happy Halloween.
