November News!
/Somewhat impossibly, we have arrived at the penultimate news update for 2022! With Halloween and bonfire night in the rear view mirror and the festive season almost upon us, it is difficult to believe that another year is almost under our belts. It has been a busy year so far with a host of new, exciting projects and these last few months are not showing any sign of slowing down.
This month has seen new projects arising in the form of further station remedial works at Inverkip and Clydebank, and we also make out return to Troon station, this time as part of the station refurbishment project. Further works involving the platform lighting have grown out of our previous involvement at Cathcart station in Glasgow while, a little further South, we have also become involved with station fit out works at Carlisle. In England, works have begun on a scheme involving some compact PSPs and, in the commercial sector, design works are underway at a farmhouse in Johnston.
November’s ongoing projects are led by Bangor to Colwyn Bay design; Goole Swing Bridge GRIP 6 design; separate designs for the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin Railway routes; Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations; and large scale works for the Ferrybridge to Goole route. LLPA design for two Railway sites in the Glasgow area; genset works at Atrium court, CET design at Craigentinny Depot; and design for executive suites in some nearby Glasgow Railway offices are all well underway this month, as are the upgrade of Saltcoats Station waiting area and Selby AFA. Railway Depots around the country continue to be busy with works encompassing accommodation design; LMD CETs; departure roads, drainage, office HVAC; and points converters; alongside the main Glasgow and Edinburgh Stations, which are still hosting works including design advice for power supplies; lighting DB design; work on the ScotRail simulators; retail supplies; retail units design fluid dispensing works; ventilation; design for Superloos; Control Centre Renewals; and Millerhill Sidings. CRE duties for works at Millerhill and Heaton Depots, and boiler design in Motherwell are just in the process of commencing; while initial tendering enquiries for the proposed new Forth Bridge Visitor Centre are still in progress. Remedial works at multiple West Coast stations are continuing while, around Glasgow, we continue to provide design assistance with the DHL at Cadder; Carstairs Rationalisation; Port Glasgow, Johnston and Croy AFA projects; and ticket vending machine design across multiple sites. The North of Scotland remains firmly in our sights this month with projects covering works on the Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie route; the Dalcross GRIP 4 project; construction phase works and frost protection at Aberdeen Station; and several projects in Inverness including a welder’s yard, work stations and axle counters; and a further railway simulator. Meanwhile, heading South of the Border, we remain involved with Hessle Station lighting; Birmingham and Euston Stations. design near Widnes; additional design for London to Corby; shed extension works in Tysley; and works for a subway pump in Goole that are close to commencement.
This winter sees the commercial sector remain strong with an office refurbishment in Kilsyth and provision of design advice for ventilation in a Cumbernauld Vape Shop. We also remain involved with a primary school in Moray; a biomass site in Portree; and preparatory works for a potential scheme across several Scottish lighthouses; while we are approaching the end of works related to the ash lagoons in Valleyfield created following the closure of Longannet Power Station in 2016.
This year looks set to the first ‘normal’ festive season since 2019, and SVM are looking forward to both celebrating with our clients and collaborators as many industry Christmas functions make their return and also to our own Santa-jumper clad Christmas lunch, which has been sorely missed the past couple of years. So if the above sounds exciting and you want to join the Christmas party season - and you already have Railway based electrical and mechanical design experience in a consultancy/contractor setting – then please send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk – and it could be a very Merry Christmas.
