October News!
/The nights are getting darker and trick or treating season is just around the corner but here at SVM Glasgow we are as busy as ever with new projects arising to expand our already extensive portfolio. There’s certainly plenty to do to fill that extra hour coming up at the end of the month.
New ghoulish delights this month include some CRE duties for works at Millerhill and Heaton Depots and some LLPA design for two Railway sites in the Glasgow area. We have been begun to look into some boiler design in Motherwell while we are at the pricing stages for several new projects varying from further station works in Troon to design for multiple M&E services at a Railway location in the Borders.
In ongoing works this October, the biggest scary monsters include Bangor to Colwyn Bay design; Goole Swing Bridge GRIP 6 design; separate designs for the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin Railway routes; Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations; large scale works for the Ferrybridge to Goole route; and shed extension works in Tysley. Projects beginning to gain momentum this month are comprised of Genset works at Atrium court, CET design at Craigentinny Depot; and design for executive suites in some nearby Glasgow Railway offices. Meanwhile, also making good progress this month, are the upgrade of Saltcoats Station waiting area; Selby AFA; and Railway Depots around the country with works encompassing accommodation design; LMD CETs; departure roads, drainage, office HVAC; and points converters. West Coast stations including Paisley Gilmour St, Burntisland and Inverkip continue to require design for remedial works while Glasgow Central Station remains a busy place with design advice for power supplies; lighting DB design; work on the ScotRail simulators; retail supplies; and retail units design. In the area surrounding Glasgow we continue to provide design assistance with the DHL at Cadder; Carstairs Rationalisation; Port Glasgow, Johnston and Croy AFA projects; and ticket vending machine design across multiple sites. Moving from Glasgow to Edinburgh sees us just as busy with projects covering gas supplies; fluid dispensing works; ventilation; design for Superloos; Control Centre Renewals; Millerhill Sidings; and initial tendering enquiries for the proposed new Forth Bridge Visitor Centre. Spreading out across the rest of the Country, we are still in the market for a trip up North with projects covering works on the Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie route; the Dalcross GRIP 4 project; construction phase works and frost protection at Aberdeen Station; and several projects in Inverness including a welder’s yard, work stations and axle counters; and a further railway simulator. England has not escaped our notice again this month with Hessle Station lighting making good progress while reactive works are ongoing for Birmingham and Euston Stations. Shore supplies design at Crewe; design near Widnes; and additional design for London to Corby are all still ongoing and we are eagerly awaiting the green flag for works for a subway pump in Goole and a selection of managed stations.
The commercial sector remains an important part of our trick or treating bag in October with initial design advice for a new domestic property being constructed in Renfrewshire; an office refurbishment in Kilsyth; and provision of design advice for ventilation in a Cumbernauld Vape Shop. We also remain involved with a primary school in Moray; a biomass site in Portree; and preparatory works for a potential scheme across several Scottish lighthouses while we are approaching the end of works related to the ash lagoons in Valleyfield created following the closure of Longannet Power Station in 2016.
As well as being a scary month, October is also a scholarly one with multiple engineers heading back to University for the new term and enhancing their skills, while still gaining experience in the SVM office. We wish them the best of luck with this academic year and are delighted to support them through their ongoing education. So if you want to learn and further your skills - and you already have Railway based electrical and mechanical design experience in a consultancy/contractor setting – then SVM might be the place for you. Please send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk – and it could be a great opportunity.
