September News!

Autumn is upon us and we are closing in on the final quarter of another tumultuous year; however, while there is still cause for concern out there in the world, we are delighted that almost all of SVM staff are now back to office working.  We are so glad to be working together as a team, face to face again and hope that we can continue to do so safely and efficiently for a long time to come.

Along with the staff, more and more projects have been flooding into the office with new works being instructed for a new AFA scheme at Selby and the next phase of the existing works at Croy and Johnston; rebuilding challenges at Troon station; and accommodation works at Eastfield Depot.  At the big Edinburgh railway sites, we’ve become involved with toilet ventilation at Waverley and fluid dispensing works at Haymarket, while in Glasgow we’re looking at design for a NR commercial property.  We are awaiting the start of a large scale project concerning review of the electrical supplies at several West Coast stations beginning with Stranraer, Inverkip and Hyndland; while we have also been asked to provide design advice for works involving Corkerhill departure roads.  Away from the Railway this month, but sticking to the transport theme, we have undertaken design for heating at an airport hangar and, elsewhere, are providing expert advice following a fire in a Glasow University building.

Meanwhile in September there are still a host of ongoing projects, headed up this month by design at Reston Station and Portobello Junction; the construction phase of works at Aberdeen Station; large scale design on the Ferrybridge to Goole line in England; Carstairs Rationalisation; and the Edinburgh Control Centre Renewal.  As well as these, we also remain involved with refurbishment at Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level Stations and further works at Glasgow Central High Level pertaining to retail areas, power supplies and lighting DB design.  Staying in and around the city, Cathcart DBs are ongoing as is mechanical design at Polmadie Depot and blue light installation at Bellgrove; while, spreading outwards, we are continuing to provide design advice for HST Lighting Upgrades at multiple sites; Cathcart DBs; Linlithgow Platform Extension; and depot accommodation at Yoker and Corkerhill, the latter of which also sees works for points converters and drainage.  There are still several projects centred around the capital with concourse lighting, heating and ventilation all at Waverley Station and electrical calcs for a project near Burntisland.  Asset surveys for railway depots across the country are still in full swing and, as we head North, we remain involved with Fort William CETs; Dundee railway yard lighting; Aberdeen lighting gantries and GRIP stage 4 works at Dalcross.  Reaching the Highlands, Inverness remains busy as always with ongoing railway yard design; Depot LV and HV upgrades, Motorail sidings, shore supplies; carriage stabling works, and EBike installation.  Finally, our projects South of the border are thriving with the VAMOS level crossings; a revisit to provide further design on the London to Corby route; Horsham platform extension; station design in Rotherhithe; and shore supplies at Crewe.  The 650V feeders renewal scheme in Middlesbrough and Whitehouse and mechanical design in the Hambleton area are making good progress as are station design works in Liverpool, our long running project at a Birmingham Station; and Reading Triangle works.  Bristol Junction design is almost complete but this should swiftly be replaced by new works underway for a project at Whitley Bay.  Commercial projects this month are also healthy, with office refurbishment at a business park in Musselburgh; design for the landmark Bell’s Bridge in Glasgow; the Clyde Gateway Regeneration Scheme and Glasgow’s Tidal Weir.

Sadly this month also sees a goodbye as electrical engineer Andrew leaves us for pastures new.  We hope that he has learned from his time at SVM and wish him well in his future endeavours.  Does this leave an empty seat in the SVM office?  It just might.  So if you would like a chance to take it – and you are an EP design engineer in either the electrical or mechanical disciplines - please send a CV to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk.  It could be just the place for you.
