September News!
/Another fleeting year is heading into its final furlong as both Autumn and the final annual quarter approach at a rate of knots. SVM are more than ready to finish out the year in style, however, as everyone is revitalised from summer breaks and looking forward to exciting new projects on the horizon.
September has been a great month for fresh opportunities, with new works beginning on a sizable project in Wales covering the Bangor to Colwyn Bay stretch of the Railway; while, closer to home, projects concerning the upgrade of Saltcoats Station waiting area; executive suites and Genset works both at Atrium Court are just underway. We have also been involved this month in the tendering or pricing stages for works involving compact PSPs; further depot accommodation and CET design; LLPA renewals; drainage in railway cuttings; and, away from the Railway, a distillery chiller replacement and mechanical design for a pumping station. All of which could keep us nice and warm through the winter.
Our biggest ongoing works leading into the Autumn are headed by separate projects on the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin routes in England; shed extension works in Tysley; Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations; Goole Swing Bridge GRIP 6 design; large scale works for the Ferrybridge to Goole route; and our Selby AFA project. As well as several of these, we also remain very busy South of the Border with shore supplies design at Crewe; design near Widnes; and additional design for London to Corby. Works for a subway pump in Goole are close to getting underway, as are those for a selection of managed stations and Hessle Station lighting, all while reactive works are ongoing for Birmingham and Euston Stations. We continue to service many Railway Depots around the country with varied works ranging across accommodation design; LMD CETs; departure roads, drainage, office HVAC; and points converters. Meanwhile, closer to home, we remain involved with remedial works at multiple stations including Paisley Gilmour St and Burntisland; a scheme associated with the DHL at Cadder; and, of course, Glasgow Central Station where we are still providing design advice for power supplies; lighting DB design; work on the ScotRail simulators; retail supplies; and retail units at Network Rail properties. Moving out of Glasgow, we are still providing design assistance for Carstairs Rationalisation; Port Glasgow, Johnston and Croy AFA projects; and ticket vending machine design across multiple sites. In and around the Capital we are continue to undertake projects covering gas supplies; fluid dispensing works; ventilation; design for Superloos; Control Centre Renewals; Millerhill Sidings; and initial tendering enquiries for the proposed new Forth Bridge Visitor Centre. The North of Scotland is also a fruitful place in September with several projects in the Perth area involving the replacement of an oily water pump, services design in some staff offices and relay room design; works on the Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie route; the Dalcross GRIP 4 project; and, of course, construction phase works and frost protection at Aberdeen Station. As well as this, in Inverness alone, we are part of works including a welder’s yard, work stations and axle counters; and a further railway simulator.
Our involvement in the commercial sector also remains strong this month with initial design advice for a new domestic property being constructed in Renfrewshire; a biomass site in Portree; an office refurbishment in Kilsyth; and provision of design advice for ventilation in a Cumbernauld Vape Shop. We also remain involved with a primary school in Moray; and preparatory works for a potential scheme across several Scottish lighthouses while we are approaching the end of works related to the ash lagoons in Valleyfield created following the closure of Longannet Power Station in 2016.
September has been a social month at SVM with an impromptu work lunch to celebrate the last of the summer sun and a night out at the Rail North of the Border event. It has also come to that time of year when the Christmas night out is also now booked – with us once again heading to Sapporo! So if you think you might like a seat at that Teppanyaki table with us - and you have Railway based electrical and mechanical design experience in a consultancy/contractor setting - please send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk – and you could be with us.
