May News!

Despite some disappointing weather for Spring, everything is bright in the SVM Office with interesting new projects popping up all across the month and keeping everyone busy.

Among May’s new crop we have seen design for temporary LV supplies at Cadder Yard, a site where we are currently involved in a few capacities; and we have begun GRIP 4-5 design works at Levenmouth, which should prove to be a substantial project.  We are also undertaking additional reports for remedial works at Inverurie and Inverness stations; upgrades to the W.C. at Slateford Depot; and design for the relocation of the DNO cubicle at Barnhill station.  Also heating up this month are work’s South of the border where we have begun to look at station platform lighting in Marske and design surrounding the traffic light at Great Glen Station in Leicestershire.

As well as these we continue to service our well established projects, this month headed up by Bangor to Colwyn Bay design; Goole Swing Bridge (GRIP 6 to 8 stages); separate designs for the Rugeley to Colwich and Welwyn to Hitchin Railway routes; Anderston and Glasgow Central Low Level stations; and large scale works for the Ferrybridge to Goole route.  With many of these projects spreading across England, it is a top destination for us this month, with other Southerly projects including the new stage of works for Tysley Depot; resignalling in the Darlington area; tunnel works at a site in West Yorkshire; and CRE duties for Nevillehill and Heaton Depots..  We also continue to be involved with works covering compact PSPs; lighting at Hessle Station; design for a subway pump in Goole; reactive involvement on long standing projects at Birmingham and Euston Stations; and design near Widnes.  Heading back into Scotland, our works reach from the North to the South with design for white diesel changeover works at multiple Scottish depots; station refurbishment works in Troon; and design for a station booking office in Ayrshire.  Meanwhile, to the North, we remain involved with works on the Blair Atholl to Dalwhinnie route; the Dalcross GRIP 4 project; and various projects in Inverness including work stations and axle counters, stations remedial works and a railway simulator.  Focussing back into the central belt, we have a lot going on across Glasgow and Edinburgh and the surrounding area starting with multiple works at Cadder Depot including design for a sliding gate, a Railway shed, the DHL and substations.  At multiple stations there are reports for remedial works being produced and AFA works being undertaken to improve access to Scotland’s railway; CET design and boiler replacements are ongoing at Craigentinny Depot; while works for Barrhead electrification are now well underway.  Our long running involvement with Carstairs rationalisation is still going strong as are multiple works at the major stations in Edinburgh and Glasgow including design advice for power supplies; work on the ScotRail simulators; retail supplies; retail units design; lighting; and ventilation design for Superloos.  Smaller scale works still continue to progress for projects such as LLPA design for multiple Railway sites; design for executive suites in some nearby Railway offices; Cathcart platform lighting; ticket vending machine design across multiple sites; and Motherwell Station boiler replacement for a new sustainably designed air source heat pump arrangement.

Away from the Railway, we continue to make our presence felt in the commercial sector with some mechanical design for a new ophthalmic day theatre; the renovation of a farm building; design for works at a timber yard near Fort William; and a project involving an office building in Dundee.   We also remain involved with a premises in a Dundee industrial estate. design works for a farmhouse in Johnstone; and an office refurbishment in Kilsyth; while we await confirmation of Port Authority works at varying stages of design and implementation from Fort William in the North, Liverpool in the West and Sheerness in the South East.

Celebrations were held and heartily enjoyed this month for the successful completion of the long running refurbishment project at Aberdeen Station.  It was a pleasure to see so much of the design team in attendance and we hope that many more projects, with such excellent outcomes await us in the future.  If you would like to be part of that future, and you are an engineer with Railway based electrical and mechanical design experience in a consultancy/contractor setting, then why not make it happen?  Please send your CV and covering letter to elise.mclean@svm-glasgow.co.uk. as you never know what lies ahead!
